If you are in the market for a new PC that is more modern, more efficient, and able to run the newest apps and games, you should consider upgrading to an Intel Skylake processor. Unlike laptops, which tend to have a fixed hardware configuration, desktop computers are much more scalable — you can easily upgrade a PC without having to replace all of the built-ins. 

Choosing the Right PC Upgrade Kit

Your upgrade kit will consist of a motherboard, a processor, and possibly some RAM modules. You can keep components with the following connectivity: SATA, PCI, and PCI-Express. Components that are more than 10 years old should be discarded (AGP, PATA and IDE). 

Upgrade Your Motherboard

You can choose a motherboard from the following brands: Biostar, MSI, ASRock, Gigabyte, orAsus. All motherboards must be equipped with an LGA 1151 socket (compatible with Skylake processors), and most importantly, it should fit into your current PC case. Most of the modern motherboards integrate an audio chipset (sound card), a network interface (Ethernet port), and at least one video output to connect your screen. High-end models tend to provide more connectivity options: 

H110: Basic model for lightweight configuration dedicated to multimedia, office use, and computer graphics. 

B150: Allows full use of the latest high-performance graphics cards (PCI-Express v3.0). 

H170: In addition to the features described above, an H170 allows you to configure multiple hard drives in RAID, and use Intel's SSD Caching feature, which allows the combination of a regular hard drive and an SSD. 

Z170: In addition to the features described above, a Z170 allows you to configure multiple graphics cards to operate simultaneously (NVIDIA SLI or AMD Crossfire). It also provides an ideal platform to overclock your Core i5-6600K and Core i7-6700K processor. 

Install New RAM

Skylake processors officially support DDR4 with a voltage of 1.2V and DDR3L with a voltage of1.35V. Regular DDR3 can still be installed, but its higher voltage of 1.5V - 1.65V will prematurely wear out the processor. In this situation, it would be better to opt for low-voltage DDR3. 

Always buy your RAM modules in matched pairs if you would like to benefit from the advantages of a dual channel architecture. It is recommended that you have at least 4GB of RAM for office, internet, and basic multimedia usage, 8GB of RAM for video games, and between 16 to 32 GB of RAM for heavy computer graphics and video editing. 

Some motherboards are compatible with both DDR 3 and DDR 4. Choosing DDR3 over DDR4 won't have much of an impact over the performance of your PC. You may either use DDR3 or DDR4, but be aware that they should never be mixed. 

Intel's Skylake Processor

All Skylake processors have an integrated graphics chipset that can handle most of your basic tasks. Most of them also include a heat sink, which is an electronic device that incorporates either a fan or a peltier device to keep components cool. Note that the 6600K and 6700K models do not have heatsinks, as they are commonly used for overclocking, or forcing a computer or hardware component to operate faster than the manufacturer-specified clock frequency. These models thus require a more effective cooling system. 

The choice of the processor will primarily depend on what you do with your computer: 

Pentium G 4000 series: Ideal for a basic or office use. You can also run games video games compatible with the GTX950 or R9 270X graphics card. 
Core i3 6000 series: Multimedia and gaming with a GTX960 or R9-380. 
Core i5 6000 series: Gaming and graphics with a GTX970/980 or R9-390. 
Core i7 6000 series: Gaming and graphics with a GTX980Ti or R9 Fury X.

How to Turn Off Volume Shadow Copy

Volume shadow copy is a feature on all versions of the Microsoft Windows operating systems that allows backup copies of files or folders on a specified volume, either automatically or manually. 

To disable the volume shadow copy, the service has to be stopped. The service can be stopped from the volume shadow copy properties window and Windows administrative tools.

What is Volume Shadow Copy?

Volume Shadow Copy, also known as Snapshot Service or VSS is a feature embedded in Windows 2003 and later in all releases of Microsoft Windows. This technology allows you to make manual or automatic backup copies or snapshots of a file or folder on a specific volume. Shadow Copy technology requires the file system to be NTFS. 

Note that once the volume shadow copy is disabled, there is no use for previous versions of a file or folder element. To lighten the properties of a file or folder,you must remove the previous versions tab through changes in the registry. If disk space poses a problem, users can edit the disk space allocated to shadow copies so that you don't have to disable the volume shadow copy. 

Disabling Volume Shadow Copy

Click on Start and type services.mc
 into the search bar. Hit Enter. 

An option for Volume Shadow Copy will appear. Double click on the icon. 

Change the startup type to Manual, and then click on Stop: 

Move to the Recovery tab: 

Set the First failure, Second failure, and Subsequent failures options to Take No Action. 

Press OK to confirm. 

How To Edit the Disk Space Allocated to Shadow Copy

If you do not want to disable shadow copies, and would prefer to customize the maximum disk space allocated to this service, here's a quick tutorial. 

Go to your Start menu, and navigate to All Programs > Accessories. 

Right-click the Command Prompt > Run as administrator. 

Next, type the following command: 
vssadmin resize shadowstorage/On = C: / For = C: / maxsize = 3GB 
. 

Note: 

The / On = C: indicates that the photos will be saved on the C drive. 

The / For = C: indicates that the photographs are those of the C drive. 

The / maxsize = 3GB indicates the size allocated to instant snapshots. In this case, that total is 3GB. 

Confirm by pressing OK. 

Disable Previous Shadow Copy Versions

Now that the service is disabled, all Previous Versions are useless. In order to lighten the menu and properties of elements, it is best to remove it. However, before proceeding with this, it is highly recommended that you back up your registry: 

Open the Registry Editor and locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\ 
. 

Create a new key with the name PreviousVersions by going to the Edit menu > New > Key. 

Next, create a new DWORD (32bits) under the latter key by using the name DisableLocalPage. You can do this by going to the Edit menu > New > DWORD (32 bit). 

Double click this value and put 1 in the data fields.

Save Web Pages to your Google Drive

The Google Docs team has released a new Chrome add-on that will help you save full web pages to your Google Drive with a click.

You can choose to save web pages as HTML files, as Google Documents or as .mht files where the entire page (including the CSS and JavaScript) is packed into a single web archive file that can later be viewed inside Internet Explorer 

Send any Web File to Google Drive

This isn’t just limited to saving web page but works with other types of web content too.

For instance, you can right-click any image on a web page and save it to your online Google Drive account. The add-on can be configured to save a static screenshot image (PNG) of the current web page. It can also be used for saving audio, video, PDFs and even Office files from the Internet to Google Drive though it would fail if the size of the file exceeds 25 MB.

All files are saved in the root folder of Google Drive and there isn’t a way to change the default save location. Also, the add-on will initially save the web pages /images to your local computer and then uploads them to your Google Drive. They aren’t transferring stuff directly in the cloud.

You don’t however need the Google Drive app on your computer for this to work.

Save Web Pages as PDFs Without Installing Extensions

While there are plenty of PDF writing software and online conversion services around that can help you save web pages as PDF files, the fact is that you don’t need any of them as long as you have Google Chrome on your computer.

Open any web page inside Google Chrome, press Ctrl+P (or Cmd+P if you are on a Mac) to open the Print dialog and change the destination printer to “Save as PDF.” Hit the Print button and the current web page will instantly download as a PDF document. Simple!

You neither have to install any software on your computer nor any extensions in your browser because Google Chrome itself acts as the PDF writer.

This is especially useful for downloading PDF copies of web pages that involve transactions or session data – like the checkout page on a shopping website – because you often cannot pass such pages to any online PDF conversion service.
